Medium ruby-purple colored, with a meaty/ earthy nose with an undercurrent of black olives, pomegranate, black raspberries and plum, plus hints of spicebox and forest floor. The medium bodied palate in fruitier than the nose, with crisp acidity and a rich level of velvety tannins, finishing long.
“The 2014 Pinotage, Fort Ross Vineyard is terrific, and I suspect it is the finest Pinotage I’ve ever tasted from outside South Africa. Outstanding notes of scorched earth, black cherries, graphite, and some classic herbal characteristics all give way to a medium-bodied red that has a layered texture, terrific balance and a great finish. Hats off to winemaker Jeff Pisoni for making a truly outstanding Pinotage.” 90 Points – Jeb Dunnuck
Ruby in hue, this elegant, medium-bodied Pinot Noir entices with aromas of raspberry and orange pekoe tea, framed by touches of earthy mushroom, cola and a wisp of roses. The alluring aromatics lead to an integrated palate defined by layers of bing cherry, bramble berries with a dash of bright cranberry, and citrus. Fine, evolved, tannins and the Fort Ross Vineyard signature minerality are revealed through the smooth, mature, lingering finish. This Reserve Pinot Noir, comprised of our best 5 barrels of the vintage, will age gracefully for 7-10 years and beyond.

The 2014 Scholar a wonderful wine that begins our reserve wine series, blending 90% Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Coombsville Merlot. It is a beautifully crafted wine that bursts from the glass with intense black cherry, currant liquor, mocha, and crushed violets. Concentrated flavors of exotic spice and roasted sage pair amazingly well with tiers of freshly crushed black and blue fruits. The small touches of Merlot provide just the right amount of grace and softness to create refined tannins and a long lasting finish.
The 2014 Valedictorian is a fantastic blend of 85% Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Coombsville Merlot. Deep, brooding flavors of preserved plum and blackberry pie are accented perfectly with hints of cedar and mocha. Layers of minerality, graphite, and wild berries make this a rich and full-bodied wine. A splash of Merlot provides a satin-like finish.
The 2014 Ph.D. is the pinnacle of our reserve wine series. A wine for the purist, it is 100% Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a muscular wine that offers a bounty of both fruit and earth driven aromatics. Bursts of black currant and blackberry fruit leap from the glass. Notes of chocolate, graphite, and wild fruit layer themselves together seamlessly. Cocoa and hits of oak grace the palate as tiers of rich, exotic flavors unfold, providing a satisfying backbone.
The richness of candied Meyer Lemon rinds and pear purée wrap around a core of Key Lime, finishing with a hint of toasted almond, velvety and lush. The kiss of citrus is the perfect balance for an absolutely beautiful wine.
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with expressive aromas of dark cherry, cassis, wet earth and leather, along with subtle hints of baking spices. The palate is characterized by dark, brooding flavors unfurling slowly and supported by a dense structure. Notes of black currant, cherry, and black olive are elegantly balanced with supporting acidity leading into a dense, lingering finish.
This wine defines our passion for mountain grown Cabernet Sauvignon. At 1,500 feet elevation, at the end of a long and winding road, Larry Stricker’s picturesque vineyard comprises a series of steep hillsides and mixed sedimentary and volcanic soils. The Cabernet Sauvignon vines that cling to its slopes produce small clusters of deeply concentrated grapes that lead to statuesque wines with immense aging potential.
